Burrum Heads Christian Community Church.

Burrum Heads Christian Community Church.

Is a multi-denominational church with a rich history with the ongoing support by the Church and local communities which is strong and very much appreciated.

CURRENT:  A very friendly, dedicated, multi-denominational committee meets bi-monthly, to discuss any issues relating to the maintenance of the church building, or functions planned.  All comers are welcome and invited to share ideas.

CHRISTMAS  CAROLS:    Are held annually in the Church grounds,  with the date  widely advertised, once availability is established.  The support from the local community and visitors is great and the crowds of visitors and locals attending, gets larger every year.

TOMBOLA:    The church community is responsible for the maintenance of the building and grounds, so it holds a once a year fund raising event, by way of a Tombola and White Elephant Stall, to help with this.  The many donations of gift and craft lines are much sought after and judging by the numbers attending, support from the local communities, businesses, Hervey Bay and surrounding communities and a heap of volunteers, this event is strongly supported.

HISTORY:    The block of land upon which the Church is situated was bought by the Whitby family some years before.  The first Church building in Burrum Heads,  originally belonged to the Methodists and was situated in Kent Street Urangan, Hervey Bay, since 1919.  It closed in 1986, following amalgamation of a number of denominations, to form the Uniting Church.

As it was no longer being used,  thanks go to the efforts of many,  who were very active in having the building moved to Burrum Heads.   Although this is the first Church building, Christian communities had been worshipping in Burrum Heads for some 40 years before that, meeting in homes and the Community Hall.  Originally they came under the Isis Parish but subsequently came under the Hervey Bay Parish.  The building was allocated for use of the Burrum Heads community by the Hervey Bay Uniting  Church, which owns the building.

At greatly discounted prices, Hyde and Hose of Maryborough, House Removalists, transported the building and re-assembled it on its' present site, on the corner of Howard Street, Burrum Heads in January 1991.  The removal costs were funded from a number of sources, including a grant from the Uniting Church Investment Services Fund, as well as a substantial donation from the Burrum Heads Progress Association.

The donations of  various church furniture came from the small Christian communities in surrounding towns:  the altar and brass was donated by St Stephen's Anglican Church at Torbanlea; the font and lectern were from the Isis Parish Anglican Church and were lovingly restored by a local Lloyd Budd;  the hymn board was a gift from the Leeson family in memory of Thomas Leeson senior, and came from a church in Apple Tree Creek;  and the pews and organ were purchased by the Isis Parish Church from the church in Kelvin Grove, Brisbane.  A local Lay Preacher made and donated the communion tray and glass.

Retired and current tradesmen volunteered many hours at either no, or greatly discounted, costs;            Burrum Lions kindly painted the interior;  and as the building  was pre-World War 1 vintage it naturally needed extensive renovations to restore it, ready for the Services currently held in it.

The first service was held on Christmas Eve 1991, following Carols by Candlelight.  The dedication was planned for February 1992 however the official opening was delayed due to flooding in the area and held  on 29th March, 1992 by the Revd Ossie Dale, Chairperson of Mary Burnett Presbytery, of the Uniting Church of Australia,.

Local history, including that of the Church, was included in a  time capsule which was placed near the War Memorial in the year 2000 and to be opened in 2050.
